Designer Dictionary: Cristobal Balenciaga

‘The King of Fashion’, Cristobal Balenciaga has left behind a legacy that is virtually impossible to compete with. Even Christian Dior said that he was “the master of us (designers) all.” Coco Chanel stated the fashion designer was, “the only couturier in the truest sense of the word.”

Cristobal Balenciaga was known for his innovative and beautiful couture, which gave him the opportunity to design for Spanish and Belgian royalty.

After opening his Paris Couture house in 1937, Balenciaga’s fame continued to rise as his innovation was evident. He transformed the silhouette to that of broad shoulders and took away the emphasis of the waist.

He retired in 1968 after 30 years of working in Paris. Cristobal Balenciaga sadly passed away 23rd March 1972. Women’s Wear Daily headlined ‘The King is dead’, which truly concludes the impact this icon left on the fashion industry.

Name: Cristobal Balentziaga Eizagirre

Date of Birth: 21st January 1895

Star Sign: Aquarius

Country of Birth: Spain

Date of Death: 23rd March 1972

Label: Balenciaga

Famous Work: Creating and designing for Balenciaga, innovating fashion, Haute Couture, teaching other now iconic fashion designers

Did You Know?: Cristobal Balenciaga taught the tricks of the trade to Oscar De La Renta, Hubert de Givenchy and Emanuel Ungaro

His mother was a seamstress and therefore encouraged him to learn tailoring

He began his career as an apprentice tailor at the age of 12

A woman has no need to be perfect or even beautiful to wear my dresses. The dress will do that for her.

Elegance is elimination

A couturier must be an architect for design, a sculptor for shape, a painter for colour, a musician for harmony and a philosopher for temperance

#WiseWordsWednesday: 4 Oscar Wilde Quotes

Oscar Wilde, a legendary writer in the fields of literature, plays and academia. Famed for his passion for Aestheticism, Wilde was in love with all things art and beauty. This is particularly a reoccurring theme in the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, a classic Molicia is currently reading. As well as sharing a passion for all things bright and beautiful (to include fashion), I have instantly fallen in love with the way the author writes about his views and affections through the novel.

In addition to a #WiseWordWednesday post to Michelle Obama, here are some Oscar Wilde quotes that stir the mind have resignated deeply with people all over the world.

#WiseWordsWednesday: Michelle Obama

1st February commences the first day of Black History Month, 28 days where African-American history is celebrated.

In honour of this, the comeback of #WiseWordsWednesday and due to the current political climate, where we have seen protests such as the global Women’s March and backlash to Trump’s anti-immigration in the US, it was thought to be relevant and romantic to dedicate this post to Michelle Obama.

The former First Lady of the United States is a role model to millions of people around the world. Whether it be for always speaking for the rights of women, inspiring other people of colour or her gracious fashion sense.

Nevertheless, the people’s favourite First Lady has announced she will not be running for President in 2020. Even though this saddens us, it doesn’t hurt to hope and pray!

Here are 3 quotes that made us fall in love with Michelle Obama and will hopefully inspire you to carry on through the midweek blues:

#WiseWordsWednesdays: Empowerment

Ah, once again I am returning to the subject of Feminism – a social issue that many misinterpret and mistake for matriarchy. Before I continue, let’s all be reminded of the definition of Feminism:

Feminism: ‘a person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes.’

Today’s #WiseWordsWednesday is about how as a female, you should embrace who you are and uplift yourself without criticising other women.

You can be a girl who loves eating fast food but don’t criticise the girls who prefer to eat salad. You can be a female who loves making an effort with her appearance with makeup, but don’t put down the females who step out with their hair in a bun and wear none. You can be a woman who only has sex with partners you’re in a romantic relationships with, but don’t slut shame the women who enjoy casual sex.

We are all different, even if we value similar things. As women, we should unite and empower each other daily. Give each other compliments, defend each other and speak kindly of one another even behind each other’s backs.

It is draining to see jealousy, slut-shaming and spite. Let’s not. Let’s unite. Let’s be happy. We are strong, capable and beautiful. Each and every one of use. Let’s embrace each other, let’s support each other and let’s empower each other.

Other women are not your competition.
