Designer Dictionary: Cristobal Balenciaga

‘The King of Fashion’, Cristobal Balenciaga has left behind a legacy that is virtually impossible to compete with. Even Christian Dior said that he was “the master of us (designers) all.” Coco Chanel stated the fashion designer was, “the only couturier in the truest sense of the word.”

Cristobal Balenciaga was known for his innovative and beautiful couture, which gave him the opportunity to design for Spanish and Belgian royalty.

After opening his Paris Couture house in 1937, Balenciaga’s fame continued to rise as his innovation was evident. He transformed the silhouette to that of broad shoulders and took away the emphasis of the waist.

He retired in 1968 after 30 years of working in Paris. Cristobal Balenciaga sadly passed away 23rd March 1972. Women’s Wear Daily headlined ‘The King is dead’, which truly concludes the impact this icon left on the fashion industry.

Quotes:

A woman has no need to be perfect or even beautiful to wear my dresses. The dress will do that for her.

Elegance is elimination

A couturier must be an architect for design, a sculptor for shape, a painter for colour, a musician for harmony and a philosopher for temperance

Couture Week: Guo Pei SS17

All women are queens, but could you imagine a world where every one of you was designated a custom-made gown and crown to materialise your royal status? Guo Pei’s SS17 Couture collection creates this fantastical regal supremity.

Virtually every noble lady elegantly ruled the runway in their gold-dripped dresses that were encrusted in jewel embellishments. The majority of the garments draped to the floor which created a graceful illusion of flotation. Water colours, pale pinks and purples created a resemblance to the fine artworks and luxurious architecture that would be seen in a palace.

Guo Pei’s SS17 Couture collection blurs the lines between reality and fantasy, which is what high fashion is truly adored for.

Couture Week: Valentino SS17

Imagine watching a runway show where the models are walking in exclusive Couture gowns and then you notice that they are wearing tan-coloured sandals with them. This is what occurred at Valentino’s SS17 Couture show. You would think pairing a basic-looking flat shoe would subtract from the beauty of the gowns, right? Wrong. With the straight silhouette we saw demonstrated, the sandals created an illusion as though the models were floating in their dresses. Not in a paranormal way either, but graceful and romantic. Every garment was floor-lengthed to enhance this and endless amounts of chiffon concluded.

As well as hovering ensembles, Valentino offered a colour palette that resembled a bouquet of roses: dusty pink, pure white and deep red. Even one of the gowns was covered in the passionate flower.

In the midst of Couture Week when we are bombarded with images of extravagance and excessive crystal embellishments, Valentino romanticises a softer appearance. When other designer gowns command attention, Valentino’s simply whisper, “I’m here.”

Couture Week: Zuhair Murad SS17

Zuhair Murad is a celebration of couture, his designs represent everything we associate with having fun: nighttime, fireworks and vivid colours. When one wears a Zuhair Murad gown, you can guarantee they will not only be the centre of attantion, but the life and soul of the party too.

Zuhair Murad’s SS17 Couture collection displayed intense jewel-tones of: sapphire, ruby and emerald. The embroidered crystals on gowns resemble rockets that have exploded in the dark sky. Some of the dresses also held the colour of champagne. If these themes don’t shout ‘luxury’, I don’t know what does. A classic silhouette of plunging v-shaped necklines, tight waistlines and flaring skirt also lead as a key theme to the show.

In Zuhair Murad’s SS17 Couture collection, garments represent hardcore extravagance and ultimate glamour.

Couture Week: Elie Saab SS17

I asked myself this week, ‘what would Couture be without Elie Saab?’ Well, it would still be just that, but the fashion house amplifies the fantasy we experience during Couture Week. Every model who walks on the Elie Saab runway looks as though they have just finished the most luxurious editorial and taken the garments home.

Jewel-tones and metallics dominated the runway at Elie Saab: sapphire satin, crystal flower embellishments and endless amounts of gold.

The accessories also commanded the audience’s attention. Many of the ensembles featured matching headbands which could potentially become a huge trend. Accompanying earrings, bracelets and necklaces were large in size and glimmer.

Elie Saab’s SS17 Couture collection sells the dream of material success and shows off the beauty that money can buy you with grace.
