Designer Dictionary: Cristobal Balenciaga

‘The King of Fashion’, Cristobal Balenciaga has left behind a legacy that is virtually impossible to compete with. Even Christian Dior said that he was “the master of us (designers) all.” Coco Chanel stated the fashion designer was, “the only couturier in the truest sense of the word.”

Cristobal Balenciaga was known for his innovative and beautiful couture, which gave him the opportunity to design for Spanish and Belgian royalty.

After opening his Paris Couture house in 1937, Balenciaga’s fame continued to rise as his innovation was evident. He transformed the silhouette to that of broad shoulders and took away the emphasis of the waist.

He retired in 1968 after 30 years of working in Paris. Cristobal Balenciaga sadly passed away 23rd March 1972. Women’s Wear Daily headlined ‘The King is dead’, which truly concludes the impact this icon left on the fashion industry.

Quotes:

A woman has no need to be perfect or even beautiful to wear my dresses. The dress will do that for her.

Elegance is elimination

A couturier must be an architect for design, a sculptor for shape, a painter for colour, a musician for harmony and a philosopher for temperance

Couture Week: Valentino SS17

Imagine watching a runway show where the models are walking in exclusive Couture gowns and then you notice that they are wearing tan-coloured sandals with them. This is what occurred at Valentino’s SS17 Couture show. You would think pairing a basic-looking flat shoe would subtract from the beauty of the gowns, right? Wrong. With the straight silhouette we saw demonstrated, the sandals created an illusion as though the models were floating in their dresses. Not in a paranormal way either, but graceful and romantic. Every garment was floor-lengthed to enhance this and endless amounts of chiffon concluded.

As well as hovering ensembles, Valentino offered a colour palette that resembled a bouquet of roses: dusty pink, pure white and deep red. Even one of the gowns was covered in the passionate flower.

In the midst of Couture Week when we are bombarded with images of extravagance and excessive crystal embellishments, Valentino romanticises a softer appearance. When other designer gowns command attention, Valentino’s simply whisper, “I’m here.”

Couture Week: Tony Ward SS17

One thing that is demonstrated during Tony Ward’s SS17 Couture collection is attention to detail. It still astonishes me that designers have the ability to look at natural objects such as flowers then turn them into delicate details of golden embroidery. Tony Ward makes it seem as though those tiny sewn-on flowers are part of a woman’s body. This is shown by placing these minor details where the natural curves of a lady are, enhancing her shape in a soft but flattering manner. Another beautiful feature is a cape that is attached to the back of a gown which has laser-cut patterns, the light shines through them and creates a reflection on the floor as the model walks.

In this collection, we see the beauty that occurs when a fashion designer takes gentle care and tough effort with their work. Tony Ward presents the epitome of couture in his SS17 collection: quality, effort and breathtaking design.

Couture Week: Alexandre Vauthier SS17

A stunning collection was presented alongside a beautiful star-studded cast that included Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Alexandre Vauthier’s SS17 Couture collection featured garments that exposed a shoulder or two and silhouettes were feminine, flattering the models’ bodies. Black and white dominated the clothing but bright reds and bold blues juxtaposed to create a vivid statement of colour. Whether it was a mini skirt and baggy jumper combination or a little black dress, most of the ensembles were teamed with a pair of translucent polka dot tights, which added dimension and further edge. Alexandre Vauthier has a way of making women look boldly beautiful which is expressed through mastering cuts in the outfits and flattering exposure. The collection is flirtatious whilst declaring a message of independence.

Sports Luxe? Olivier Rousteing x Nike

A completely new definition to Sports Luxe has been created. By who? No other than our favourite celebrity high fashion designer, Olivier Rousteing.

Yesterday, Olivier debuted his collaboration with Sports brand giant, Nike, on his 3.2 million follower Instagram account.

The shoot which was shot for Dazed and Confused by photographer, Nick Knight features classic Balmain elements such as heavy gold decor and satin.  It resembles a modern twist on a timeless painting that you would find at the Louvre.

That’s not quite all though…

Of course, we all know that Olivier has a celebrity contact list on his phone that anyone would be jealous of, but… What would a Nike campaign be without no other than Cristiano Ronaldo?!

Anyone who knows me, is more than acknowledging of the fact that I am a huge fan of Cristiano a.k.a. Future Husband, (joking, or am I?) Real Madrid’s superstar striker made a modelling debut in the campaign, which certifies this shoot as Modern Art.
