#WiseWordsWednesday: Beyoncé

First of all, I’d like to apologise for my lack of posts last week, I was bedridden with the combination of a virus and tonsillitis. Now that I’ve recovered from my near death experience, I would like to talk to you all about the true definition of Feminism, (with the help of Queen B).

The subject of Feminsim is often confused within today’s society. There are more than one type of Feminsim, but ultimately all Feminists are trying to achieve the same goal. Lyrics spoken by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in Beyoncé’s song, Flawless, define Feminsim in a simple but effective way…

We teach girls to shrink themselves to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, “You can have ambition but not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful otherwise you will threaten the man.” Because I am female I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. A marriage can be a system of joy and love and mutual support, but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors, not for jobs or accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they can not be sexual beings in the way that boys are. Feminist: A person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes.

The quote speaks for itself and I stand by it with my entire being. The next time you hear someone accusing Feminsits of being wrong or matriarchal, correct them with this accurate statement, then come and sip tea with Queen B and me.
