What is your style? Is it I-throw-the-first-thing-I-can-find-on-and-leave-the-house chic? Or do you plan your outfit to the tiniest detail, to the point of matching your nails with your shoes? Do you even know what your style is?
In the age of social media, it is easier than ever to find what your favourite celebrities wore in the last 24 hours for style-inspo. On a daily basis, our feeds are saturated with images of A-listers wearing the latest and greatest fashion, and often we are given the impressions that we should buy-into achieving that look. How many times have you considered throwing out everything you own so you can re-invent yourself around the ideas of perfection you have found on the internet? However, the majority of your role-models pay more money than most of us earn in a year for a team of stylists. Those outfits you envy are not even a reflection of the person who wore it individual taste half the time.
Many of us believe that the key to great style is to own the latest ‘must-have’ items and combine them to have that Instagram-worthy outfit. This simply isn’t true. Style is something that belongs to you, like the way you dance or the way you act on a day-to-day basis. It is an eternal characteristic of your being. You are the Creative Director of how you present yourself to the world through what you wear, your style.
The iconic designer Ralph Lauren, spoke the words:
‘Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever.’
You could spend your entire life wearing whatever is considered to be fashionable in the moment, but you wouldn’t be being true to yourself. You would be a slave to fashion, and your style would not reflect the amazing things that make you an individual.
The best style advice you will ever hear is to be true to yourself. Wear whatever you like. That’s it. It’s okay if you would prefer to wear a pair of Converse than wear a pair of Louboutins and it’s okay if you would prefer wearing skirts that skim your thighs than wearing jeans. Choose not to care what other people might think, for if we all thought the same it would be an incredibly boring world. Choose style, choose confidence, choose you.
