After months of speculation and a whirl-wind of rumours, yesterday, Calvin Klein announced Raf Simons as the new Chief Creative Director of the world-renowned brand. The long-awaited announcement of Simons’ move was due to a clause in his contract at Dior, which ended last month.

The role will require Simons to take the reigns of design, global marketing and communication. This power spreads across the Calvin Klein brand such as: Calvin Klein CollectionCalvin Klein Jeans and Calvin Klein Underwear

Steve Shiffman, the CEO of the brand, took to Facebook to comment on the arrival of Raf Simons.

Not since Mr. Klein himself was at the company has it been led by one creative visionary, and I am confident that this decision will drive the Calvin Klein brand and have a significant impact on its future. Raf’s exceptional contributions have shaped and modernised fashion as we see it today and, under his direction, Calvin Klein will further solidify its position as a leading global lifestyle brand.

The news isn’t a surprise to most, as Raf Simon’s is perfectly qualified for the role.  However, in an interview with System magazine last year, Simons was critical of the fashion industry’s pace and how it restricts the creative process.

When you try and idea, you look and think, hmm, let’s put it away for a week and think about it later. But that’s never possible when you have only one team working on all the collections. What are you going to do? Walk out of the office at 8 o’clock at night? No, of course not. So you stay there until midnight. That’s the life.

Even with the weight of responsibility over one of the world’s leading lifestyle brands, Raf Simon’s creative vision for Calvin Klein is highly anticipated. The FW17 ready-to-wear show, will be the first runway show we see his vision.
